X-Wedge Engine Details

American Rider

S&S Cycle has released further details about its new X-Wedge engine, which by all accounts is destined to become the premiere power plant of many American motorcycles.

With a large 4.125-inch bore, the 117-cubic-inch engine has the same stroke (4.375 inches) as a Harley TC96 engine.  The 2-inch intake and 1.6-inch exhaust valves are arranged in what S&S calls its Cross Wedge design, and a toothed belt drives the crankcase-located drive gear.  Cylinder angle is 56.25 degrees.  The engine has the potential to be enlarged to139 inches.

The X-Wedge design process was launched in 2002 with the goal of meeting 2008 and 2010 EPA regulations, and beyond.  To help achieve this, the new S&S single-bore throttle body has its injectors located directly in each cylinder head.  Cylinder and head design and finning have been maximized to enhance cooling.

Prototype engines have been tested in numerous 200- and 800-hour dyno programs.  Production may start as early as this fall.  For further information go to www.sscycle.com
