Rucker Performance Super Gas

SPEED

Jan-Feb 2006 – Brett DeGood truly looked like a chip off his old block Dan in 2005, winning the Rucker Performance Super Gas National and Eastern championships. "This Super Gas championship felt much more satisfying to me than my 2000 Supersport championship," Brett said. "The competition is so much stronger now than it used to be, and it felt as if I had to work harder to earn this one.

"I never felt as if I had a comfortable lead, and that gave each race a feeling of utmost importance. With racers like Blake Holliday [the national runner-up], Greg Krenik [the Western champion and Supersport runner-up], Craig Pollard, Charlie Walker and Dave Ostrowske breathing down my neck, I'm glad that I took each race so seriously and prepared accordingly. With the competition present in the sportsman ranks these days, there is always someone ready to capitalize on your mistakes, so it's a game of trying to make the fewest."

DeGood described his bike as a mutt. "Originally it was a 1989 Sportster. I started modifying it in high school and continue to do so all the time—it's a real work in progress. I do all the maintenance and construction myself. The 98" motor was actually Mike Acton's a long, long time ago, and it has Dave Mackie heads on it. It's much different than the motor I ran with when I got my Supersport championship, which has since suffered a terminal heart attack.

"I tailored the chassis to my tall, slim build, and it really fits me well. Right now, the bike is completely torn down so I can go through every piece and system to get just a little more reliability and consistency out of it. Come Gainesville, the bike and I will be ready to launch an all out attempt to defend my championship.

"I need to thank my mom and dad (the ET champ). I could not have done this without them. I also need to thank Rucker Performance and all of the contingency sponsors for helping make this possible. Finally, I owe a great deal to Donnie Huffman, Charlie and Eleanor Walker, Frank and Paula Dove, all my competitors, and the entire sanction staff for making this season very special and enjoyable."
